| Twenty-five years after they were convicted of a horrendous crime that never actually happened, Fran and Dan Keller were formally exonerated this week in Austin, Texas. The Kellers' prosecution came amid the mass hysteria known as the Satanic Panic, when police and prosecutors were convinced that Satanists had infiltrated day care centers to abuse children. Their exoneration was made possible thanks to evidence uncovered by reporter Jordan Smith, who spent years covering the case. "I still can't believe it's happening," Fran Keller told Smith on the day her name was cleared. Meanwhile, Alleen Brown, Will Parrish, and Alice Speri continue their investigation into the fusion of private security, public law enforcement, and corporate money in the fight over the Dakota Access Pipeline. Among this week's revelations from the cache of leaked situation reports TigerSwan filed to DAPL's parent company: As Standing Rock camps were evicted and protesters' numbers dwindled, the security contractor stepped up its efforts to portray the situation as dangerous and expanded surveillance operations to follow pipeline opponents as they moved to other states. |
