Brazil's unemployed population was 12.3 million people in 2016, with an average unemployment rate of 12%—the highest in the time series that began in 2012.
This data is part of the national survey on the country's employment situation released Jan. 31) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). According to the publication, the unemployed population in Brazil has grown 36% over a year (comparing the fourth quarter of 2016 with the same period of 2015), equivalent to an increase of 3.3 million unemployed people.
The country's employed population at the close of 2016 was 90.3 million workers. About 34 million people had formal employment contracts in the private sector, and that figure remained stable in the final moving quarter of the year.
