Politics in France: Looking for Mr Right
After last night’s win in the primary for the centre-right Republicans, François Fillon is now the favourite to become president next year. He will need votes from the left to thwart his likely opponent, Marine Le Pen, of the far-right National Front. That will be tricky when he promises to cut 500,000 civil-service jobs and abolish the 35-hour working week limit. Cuba after Fidel Castro: Fatigued
The death of Fidel is the most important milestone in the slow transition to a post-Castro Cuba. His brother, Raúl, has promised to step down as president in 2018, though his declared intention is that Cuba should remain a one-party state. Language in Israel: Status update
Arabic, an official language of Israel, is the native tongue of a fifth of the population. Yet in the past it was discouraged. Arabic songs were banned from the radio for decades. In 2014 MPs tried to retract the language’s official status. Hebrew schools still get more cash than Arabic ones. Most speakers say they are treated as second-class citizens. Tennis rule changes: Bad call
The scoring system in tennis, known for its quirkiness, is coming under fire as the sport aims to become more media-friendly by shortening its matches. A decade ago, two rule changes—a winner-takes-all point at deuce and a ten-point “super-tiebreak” instead of a deciding set—were introduced in second-tier doubles competitions. If these rules came to grand slams, matches would be shorter but also much less exciting
