The Wanda Group has proposed a tourism complex for an old minesite in China

In China, the large Dalian Wanda Group is reportedly planning a tourism complex including a hotel cluster, a large botanical garden in the old pit, a 60,000-seat stadium and a Wanda shopping mall in an abandoned limestone mine.
Meanwhile, more than 60,000 mines have been abandoned in Australia, according to new Australia Institute research revealed on the ABC. The institute said the figure included mine “features” such as tailings dams and old mine shafts.
The program was only told of one Australian mine that had been fully rehabilitated and relinquished in the past 10 years – the New Wallsend coal mine in New South Wales.
Back in China, the former Ansteel mine in Dalian closed in 2015 and its pit measures 2.6km by 600m wide with a depth of up to 50m.
Construction of the 3sq.km new complex would begin this year, China Daily reported, quoting a Dalian government official.
The regional government hoped the project, announced this week, would attract 12 million tourists annually when it was completed.
The site is described linking the new and old urban district of Dalian, in north-east China.
The vast Wanda Group’s commercial properties arm is said to be the world’s largest real estate enterprise, its cultural arm the world’s largest cinema chain operator and its financial arm the country’s largest internet finance enterprise.
The tourism complex is part of its entertainment industry expansion and the company will have rolled out up to 20 “Wanda Cities” by 2020, according to the report
