Executive Disorder

Donald Trump's furious volley of executive orders has generated chaos and protests across the United States. Although the courts have halted the ban on travel from seven predominantly Muslim countries, Trump's draconian deportation order faces fewer obstacles and could ensnare up to 8 million people. As Ryan Devereaux reports, drawing on leaked Homeland Security communications, immigration authorities are sending reinforcements to Arizona, a sign that a deportation surge could be in the works.

The assault on immigrants was coupled this week with an insidious attack on science and public health. Sharon Lerner reports that House Republicans and Trump's EPA wrecking crew are pushing a bill called the Secret Science Reform Act that revives an old tobacco-industry strategy to delegitimize independent scientific research. The stakes couldn't be higher as the Trump administration takes aim at regulations that have saved countless lives.
