Belgium News- The European Union examines the environmental policy of Belgium

Authentic news,No fake news.

The European Commission today published its first report on how Member-States implement EU legislation on the environment. This "Environmental Implementation Review" also covers our country.   The federal and regional administrations in charge of the environment in Belgium welcome this exercise. The structure of the Environmental Implementation Review is based on the structure of the 7th Environment Action Program of the EU, which sets priorities for the period 2014-2020.   The "Belgian" report recalls the importance of decisions taken at European level on the environment and draws attention to both good practices and the work accomplished and to be accomplished. This information concerns citizens directly as they contribute to improving their quality of life and well-being. In Belgium, the federal and regional administrations consider that this report has several advantages.   First, the overall approach of the report provides an overview of many environmental issues. Then, the simultaneous examination of the situation in all the Member States of the European Union offers a point of comparison and facilitates cooperation on common challenges. Finally, the final objective of the exercise is "solutions"; It aims at identifying and remedying the difficulties encountered in the implementation process.   Belgium regrets, however, that the European Commission did not address the climate aspects in this first report. Belgium would also like the report to link more closely to other European policies that interact with environmental policies (transport, agriculture, energy, etc.). The report should thus contribute to a better coherence of policies at European, national and regional level.   The Environmental Implementation Review will be discussed in the presence of political and administrative officials of the European Commission and stakeholders at an event organized on 29 March 2017 in Brussels by the Committee, which brings together all the environmental authorities in Belgium: the Committee For the Coordination of International Environmental Policy (CCPIE). In this report, the Commission stresses the importance of cooperation between the various competent environmental entities in Belgium, such as the CCIE, the Interministerial Conference on the Environment (CIE) and The Inter-Ministerial Conference on Sustainable Development (CIMDD).   The Commission highlights the good performance of Belgium in the areas of waste policy and the circular economy put in place by the federal government, Flanders, Wallonia and the Brussels-Capital Region. Thus the Commission mentions the "Regional Program in Circular Economy" and the "Good Food" strategy of the Brussels-Capital Region. It also highlights the "Smart Specialization Strategy" and the "NEXT Program" of Wallonia as well as the "Transition to a circular economy" of Flanders. The report highlights the important contribution of cities, particularly in the implementation of environmental policies.   However, the Commission identifies some areas for which it expects progress, notably water quality and air quality.national@spw.wallonie.be. Regarding air quality, however, it notes a decrease in several pollutants and recognizes that significant efforts are already being made in the three regions (air quality plans, low-emission zones, etc.)
