JOHANNESBURG - Police have arrested 22 people in Heidelberg on suspicion of illegal mining.
The majority of the suspects are foreign nationals from Lesotho, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
The arrests were made on the first day of an SAPS campaign aimed at combatting illegal mining in the province.
Police spokesperson Kay Makhubela said: "We had a problem of illegal mining in Heidelberg where these people go underground in old mines and some ended up fighting and killing each other."
