Japan to Utilize AI, Robots for Medical, Nursing Care

Tokyo, Nov. 10 (Jiji Press)--A Japanese government panel on Thursday agreed to utilize artificial intelligence and robots in order to make the country's medical and elderly nursing care services more efficient amid the aging of the population.
At a meeting of the Council on Investments for the Future, participants agreed that the coverage of the public medical and nursing care insurance will be extended by fiscal 2020 to services in which artificial intelligence and robots are utilized.
"We'll put into full operation new medical and nursing care systems by 2020," Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who chairs the council, said, calling for reform measures for fees paid to medical and care service providers and personnel distribution standards for their services.
The panel said AI-based medical services should be covered by the public medical insurance from fiscal 2020, when the government-administered medical fee will be revised.
Nursing care services using robots, sensors to keep a watch over people in need of care, and other devices should be included in the coverage of the public nursing care insurance from fiscal 2018, the council also said.
