Influenza Season Arrives Early in Japan: Health Ministry
Tokyo, Nov. 25 (Jiji Press)--The influenza season has started in Japan, the second earliest on record since 1999, the health ministry said Friday.
At some 5,000 medical institutions across the country that are monitored constantly, the total number of flu patients stood at 6,843 in the week through Sunday, with the per-institution average at 1.38.
The flu season is considered to have arrived when the average exceeds one. Last winter, the start of the flu season delayed into early 2016, going beyond year-end for the first time in nine years.
Of the viruses detected in the patients, the type-A Hong Kong virus had the largest share, followed by the H1N1 virus and the type B virus, the ministry said.
A ministry official advised people to wear masks, cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze, and wash their hands, so as not to spread flu viruses to others. The official also recommended vaccination.
