MOSCOW, November 22 - RIA Novosti . Spanish molecular biologists have created a new antiretroviral drug which not only blocks the reproduction of HIV in the body, but is almost completely eliminates the possibility of transmission of infection during sexual intercourse. This is stated in an article published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases.

"When receiving antiretroviral drugs about 5-25% of men infected with HIV do not get rid of the presence of the virus in their gonads. For this reason, we always recommend to use condoms if their sex partners are not carriers of the virus. The new drug , dolutegravir may relieve them of this need, "- said Daniel Podzamcher (Daniel Podzamczer) from the University of Barcelona.
As the scientists explain, HIV patients today can live for decades after infection due to combination antiretroviral therapy (HAART) - a combination of several drugs that suppress certain stages of viral replication in human immune cells.
Such treatment does not lead to the complete disappearance of the virus - in fact, he simply "hibernates" and hides inside other tissues of the body, waiting for "better times". When the patient stops taking HAART-drug HIV "wakes up" and continues to destroy the immune system.

Doctors have learned to "wake up" HIV and expel him from the cell
As tell Podzamcher and colleagues, even when receiving antiretroviral HIV long time remains in small amounts in those organs where immune cells are virtually never enter, including and in the gonads.Because of this, many carriers of the virus continue to be a threat to their sexual partners, even after prolonged treatment sessions.
In recent years, scientists have created a lot of drugs that can penetrate into these bodies and gradually destroy HIV, but they do it very slowly, which creates a lot of problems for patients and physicians.
Experiments conducted Podzamchera team showed that these problems can be solved by a new class of antiretroviral drugs that suppress the so-called integrase - a special protein that helps the virus to build its DNA in infected cells.

As it turned out, one of these drugs - dolutegravir - is able to penetrate into the testes of men and destroy the virus very quickly, reducing the concentration of HIV in semen to virtually zero values about a month after the beginning of reception. Only one patient out of fifteen, according to scientists, was not able to achieve such a result, six months after the start of treatment, but after six months the situation has improved, and his sperm was almost completely free of HIV.
The success of these tests, according Podzamcher and his colleagues said about the need for early introduction of these drugs in clinical practice and the mass use of such integrase blockers in those areas of the Earth, where the HIV epidemic observed.Scientists recommend to use the drug and non-infected people as a preventive measure.
