Tokyo, Oct. 16 (Jiji Press)--Japan faces a heightened threat from North Korea, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Sunday, following U.S. and South Korean announcements of a failed missile launch by North Korea.
"The threat from North Korea has risen to a higher stage," the top government spokesman said in a speech in the northern city of Sapporo.
The government will work harder to secure broader-based support in the international community for a proposed U.N. Security Council resolution to launch additional sanctions on North Korea, officials said.
The United States and South Korea said they detected that what appeared to be a Musudan intermediate-range ballistic missile failed just after the launch around 12:30 p.m. Japan time Saturday (3:30 a.m. GMT) near the northwestern city of Kusong.
"This year, North Korea has carried out many missile and nuclear tests," Defense Minister Tomomi Inada told reporters in Tokyo.
