Erdogan opens monument to victims of failed coup

Authentic news,No fake news.

ISTANBUL (AP) — The Latest on the first anniversary since Turkey quashed last summer's coup attempt (all times local): 6:40 a.m. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has inaugurated a monument in the capital Ankara honoring the some 250 people who were killed opposing last year's failed coup attempt against his rule

The monument — depicting people standing on top of four slanted columns, carrying a moon and crescent — is situated opposite Erdogan's huge palace complex in Ankara. Erdogan opened the "Martyrs' Memorial" just after dawn on Sunday, following morning prayers at a mosque inside the complex.
The president said in address to thousands attending the ceremony: "even if we have buried our martyrs in the ground, they will always live in our hearts. (The coup-plotters) will die over and over again every day while they fester behind prison walls."
5:15 a.m.
A camera-mounted drone has crashed while filming a ceremony outside of parliament marking the first anniversary of Turkey's failed coup.
The private Dogan news agency says seven people were slightly injured in the accident and were taken away on stretchers.
The accident occurred as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was addressing thousands of people in the early hours of Sunday.
He interrupted his speech to make sure medics attended those hurt and commented: "so, drones can fall sometimes."
4:50 a.m.
Cellphone users making calls on the first anniversary of Turkey's failed coup heard a message from the nation's president conveying them his good wishes.
Omer Fatih Sayan, the head of the information and communications authority, confirmed that President Recep Tayyip's Erdogan recorded message was being played before the calls.
Erdogan is heard saying in his message: "As your president I congratulate you on the July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day, I wish God's mercy and grace for our martyrs and good health for our veterans."
Some 250 people were killed while more than 2,000 others were injured after thousands of people, heeding Erdogan's call, took to the streets a year ago to confront the coup-plotters.
4:40 a.m.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says the country's top security advisory body will discuss on Monday whether to further extend a state of emergency that was declared after last year's failed coup.
Erdogan also said he would approve "without any hesitation" any legislation that would be passed in parliament to reinstate the death penalty.
He was speaking outside of Turkey's parliament building in the early hours of Sunday at a ceremony marking the first anniversary of the July 15 coup that killed some 250 people who were trying to resist the attempt. Around 35 coup-plotters also died.
Turkey imposed the state of emergency days after the attempted insurgency to counter what government officials say is the continued threat from a movement led by U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen who is accused of orchestrating the coup. Gulen denies involvement.
Critics say the emergency powers are being used to go after all government opponents.
3:05 a.m.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has returned to the capital Ankara for a ceremony marking the moment parliament was bombed a year ago during the failed coup attempt.
Thousands of people have gathered outside the parliament in the early hours of Sunday, waving Turkish flags and holding up pictures of the 250 people who died confronting the coup-plotters. Turkey's top cleric recited a prayer for the victims.
Many marched to the building clutching a 3 kilometer- (1.86 mile) long flag, the Hurriyet newspaper reported.
11:45 p.m.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has opened a hollow, globe-shape monument in Istanbul honoring some 250 people who were killed a year ago while opposing coup-plotters trying to overthrow the government.
Erdogan inaugurated the structure, featuring the names of the "martyrs" on Saturday, as the nation marks the first anniversary of the coup attempt that was crushed by soldiers and police loyal to the government as well as by civilians who took to the streets.
The structure is situated at a park near the foot of the Bosporus Bridge, which has since been renamed the "Martyr's Bridge" to pay homage to people who were killed there while resisting the coup.
Erdogan is also scheduled to inaugurate a monument to pay tribute to the dead in the capital, Ankara.
11:15 p.m.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says he wants hundreds of people who are on trial for plotting last year's failed coup to appear in court wearing the same type of outfit — similar to those that were worn by detainees at Guantanamo.
Erdogan made the announcement on Saturday as he addressed tens of thousands of flag-waving people at a ceremony commemorating some 250 who were killed while resisting last year's failed military coup.
His comment came days after a former soldier who is on trial accused of trying to capture or kill Erdogan on the night of the coup, appeared in court wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the word "hero," triggering an outcry.
Erdogan said: "These are still their good days. I have spoken with our prime minister and said 'when they appear in court, they should wear one type of outfit, like in Guantanamo.'"
Turkey says the coup was orchestrated by U.S.-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen and some 50,000 people have been arrested for alleged links to the failed takeover. Gulen denies involvement.
10:45 p.m.
Turkey's president has likened the defeat of last year's July 15 military coup attempt to Turkey's independence war nearly a hundred years ago.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday spoke before tens of thousands of people at an iconic Istanbul bridge, calling the botched overthrow of the government a "treacherous attempt." Erdogan said Turkey's citizens, following his call to resist, had saved Turkey's future.
Turkey has blamed U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen and his network for the coup try that killed 250 people resisting it and injured 2,193 others. Thirty-five coup plotters also died in clashes. Gulen has denied the claims.
Erdogan warned that the coup attempt "was not the first and would not be the last" and warned terror groups would work to undermine the country. "Therefore we will first rip their heads off," he said to cheering crowds, adding he would approve a bill reinstating the death penalty if parliament proposed it.
9:15 p.m.
Turkey's president has joined a massive flood of people in Istanbul commemorating the defeat of a coup attempt last year.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his wife are en route to unveil a memorial for the 250 people killed resisting the attempted overthrow of the government on July 15, 2016. Erdogan was marching with children wearing shirts with Turkish flags and relatives of the deceased.
Tens of thousands have been marching to the iconic July 15 Martyrs' Bridge where citizens, heeding a call by Erdogan to resist the coup, clashed with Turkish soldiers attempting the overthrow.
Crowds on Saturday were massing at the bridge via a major highway that was closed off for the commemorative event.
7 p.m.
Thousands of people are marching from several Istanbul neighborhoods to converge at the iconic July 15 Martyrs' Bridge in a "national unity march" to commemorate the anniversary of Turkey's failed coup attempt.
The bridge, then called the Bosporus Bridge, was closed off on the night of July 15, 2016, with three tanks wielded by 136 soldiers attempting to overthrow the government and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Thousands of people, heeding a call by Erdogan, took to the streets last year to stop the coup attempt and clashed with the coup plotters. At least 30 people died on the bridge and 220 others elsewhere, according to official publications. The soldiers surrendered at daybreak.
Erdogan is scheduled to join the crowds and inaugurate a memorial in honor of those killed.
3:40 p.m.
Two opposition parties have slammed the Turkish government for missing a historic opportunity to unite the country after last summer's failed coup attempt and accused it of undermining democracy.
Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the leader of the main opposition Republican People's Party, said the July 15, 2016, coup attempt had not been fully investigated. He criticized the government for making the state of emergency imposed in its aftermath "permanent."
Ahmet Yildirim, deputy chairman of the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party, said the post-coup crackdown targeted "people and institutions who were against the coup and who did not belong to the ruling party." A dozen of the party's parliamentarians, including its co-leaders, are in prison.
They were speaking at a special parliamentary session commemorating the first anniversary of the failed coup.
3:10 p.m.
NATO's secretary general says on the first anniversary of Turkey's failed coup that any attempt to undermine democracy in any one of the allied countries is "unacceptable."
Jens Stoltenberg on Saturday also paid homage to about 250 people who lost their lives resisting the failed attempt. He praised the Turkish people who took to the streets and "stood up against this heinous act in defense of its elected government and democratic institutions."
Rogue soldiers within the Turkish army attempted to overthrow the government and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan using tanks, warplanes and helicopters on July 15 last year. The coup plotters bombed the country's parliament and other state buildings.
Stoltenberg said: "(I) still remember the shock I felt seeing the damage inflicted at the Parliament building by the bombardments of the coup plotters."
2 p.m.
Turkey has dismissed almost 7,400 civil servants for alleged links to terror groups in a government decree, the latest in a wave of dismissals since authorities quashed a coup attempt last summer.
Teachers, academics, military and police officers were sacked late Friday, including former Istanbul governor Huseyin Avni Mutlu who was jailed last August for alleged links to U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen.
Turkey blames Gulen for masterminding the July 15 coup attempt but he denies the allegations.
The country imposed a state of emergency following the coup, allowing the government to rule by decrees. The latest wave of dismissals brings the number of fired civil servants to more than 110,000 people. The order reinstated 313 people to their jobs.
The government decree also stripped nearly 350 soldiers of their ranks and former national soccer team players Hakan Sukur and Arif Erdem of their medals.
1:30 p.m.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is attending a special session in parliament to mark one year since authorities quashed last summer's coup attempt.
Recounting the events of July 15, 2016, Ismail Kahraman, speaker of the Turkish parliament, said the Turkish people defeated the coup.
During the coup F-16 fighter jets piloted by plotters bombed Turkey's parliament 11 times, forcing members of parliament who convened for an emergency session to seek shelter in the basement.
Some 250 people were killed in the failed coup attempt, and more than 2,000 were injured.
A state of emergency declared in the coup's aftermath is still in place, allowing the government to rule by decrees.
12:10 p.m.
Turkey is commemorating the first anniversary of quashing last summer's coup attempt with events over the weekend in Istanbul and Ankara.
Thousands are expected at "national unity marches" in the two cities, and speeches are planned in parliament and at an iconic Istanbul bridge.
Turkish soldiers attempted to overthrow the government and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan using tanks, warplanes and helicopters on July 15 last year. The coup plotters bombed the country's parliament and other locations but their attempt failed.
Heeding a call by the president and ignoring a curfew announced by the coup plotters, thousands of people went out on the streets to resist the coup. Some 250 people were killed and more than 2,000 were injured. Thirty-five coup plotters were also killed.

Pop star, lobbyist: The cast of Trump's Russian connections

Authentic news,No fake news.

MOSCOW (AP) — A billionaire real estate mogul, his pop singer son and a music promoter. A property lawyer, Russia's prosecutor general and a Russian-American lobbyist. These unlikely figures have come to the fore as revelations that Donald Trump's presidential campaign sought potentially damaging information in June 2016 from Russia about his opponent, Hillary Clinton.

In emails sent shortly after Trump secured the GOP nomination, music publicist Rob Goldstone offered to connect Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., to Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya. The emails show Goldstone telling Trump that singer Emin Agalarov and his father, Moscow-based real estate developer Aras Agalarov, had "helped along" the Russian government's support for Donald Trump.
Goldstone also mentioned that a Russian prosecutor offered to provide the information on Clinton to the campaign. Goldstone mentioned Russia's "crown prosecutor," but may have been referring to Russia's top justice official, Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika, the equivalent of the U.S. attorney general.
A look at some of those involved in the email exchange and the meeting at Trump Tower that followed:

ARAS AND EMIN AGALAROV

Real estate tycoon Aras Agalarov, 61, and his 37-year-old singer-songwriter son, who goes by the stage name Emin, both spent time with Trump in Russia after they bought the rights to hold the 2013 Miss Universe pageant in Moscow. The event, held at the elder Agalarov's Crocus City Mall, cost him $20 million, he told The Associated Press earlier this year. The son performed at the pageant and Trump went to his birthday party, which coincided with the contest's finale. The future president also appeared in a music video with Emin while in town.
The elder Agalarov told AP that Trump "was thinking of building" a Trump Tower in Moscow and that they proposed a site. "He was considering this, but it didn't come to signing any deals," Agalarov said.
When he returned to the U.S., Trump tweeted to Aras on Nov. 11, 2013: "I had a great weekend with you and your family. You have done a FANTASTIC job. TRUMP TOWER-MOSCOW is next. EMIN was WOW!"
"Your performance at Miss Universe was fantastic - you are a STAR!" he followed up in a tweet to the son a day later.
Emin, a partner in his father's real estate business, responded: "Thank you so much for all your support! You are a great Man."
Although Aras Agalarov does not belong to President Vladimir Putin's inner circle, he has amassed numerous government contracts, an indication of Kremlin patronage. Putin has built a system in which the rich are expected to chip in for his pet projects in return for privileges in securing state loans or getting lucrative contacts. The Agalarovs have built infrastructure for an Asian summit off the coast of Vladivostok in 2012 and are finishing two stadiums for the 2018 World Cup.
Emin Agalarov was married for several years to the oldest daughter of Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev, and they had twin sons. They were reported to have separated in 2015.
Aras Agalarov tried to get Trump an audience with Putin in 2013, but the president canceled the session, the Washington Post reported, instead sending Trump a friendly letter and a lacquered box in appreciation.

ROB GOLDSTONE

The British-born Goldstone is the co-founder of Oui 2 Entertainment, a Manhattan-based music management company that says on its website it has represented Michael Jackson and BB King, among others.
The Agalarovs hired Goldstone to help with the Miss Universe pageant in Moscow, and Goldstone has worked with Emin Agalarov since then, most recently organizing a concert featuring Canadian musician David Foster in St. Petersburg last year.
In an interview Monday with the AP, Goldstone said he set up the 2016 meeting with Donald Trump Jr. and said Veselnitskaya stated that she had information about purported illegal campaign contributions to the Democratic National Committee that she thought Trump Jr. might find helpful. Trump Jr. agreed to the meeting, Goldstone said, and it was attended by Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and then-campaign manager Paul Manafort.
The day after Trump was elected, Goldstone posted a photo on his Facebook page showing himself sitting next to Emin and Trump with the caption "The A Team — headed to the White House!" Other photos that he has posted show that he was in Russia at least three times last year and twice in Azerbaijan, the Agalarovs' home country.

NATALIA VESELNITSKAYA

Veselnitskaya started her career at the prosecutor's office in the Moscow region in 1999, but became known after 2001 for defending property deals that her opponents and activists labeled corporate land grabs. In the deals, run-down collective farms and bankrupt research centers were bought on the cheap or seized for expensive shopping malls, residential properties and highways.
In Russia's notoriously corrupt court systems, good connections are important, and she has them. She is married to Alexander Mitusov, former deputy prosecutor for the Moscow region, and she has represented the family of Pyotr Katsyv, vice president of state-owned Russian Railways and former transportation minister for the Moscow region. In 2012, the respected Novaya Gazeta newspaper documented how Veselnitskaya, her husband and the Katsyvs allegedly were involved in major corporate raiding cases.
She also represented Katsyv's son, Denis, in a money-laundering case in Manhattan that was settled for $6 million in May, three days before it was to go to trial.
The case was related to a $230 million Russian tax-fraud scheme that was brought to light by a whistleblower named Sergei Magnitsky, who was arrested and died in a Moscow prison in 2009. An official Russian investigation of his death said he suffered a heart attack, but a report by the presidential human rights commission found that Magnitsky was beaten and denied medical treatment. In 2012, the U.S. Congress passed the Magnitsky Act, imposing sanctions on Russian officials involved in alleged human rights violations in the case. Russian lawmakers responded by passed a measure that banned Americans from adopting Russian children.
Veselnitskaya helped promote a documentary that disputed the fact that Magnitsky uncovered the tax fraud and that he was beaten in jail. Human rights activists dismissed it as an attempt to whitewash torture.
William Browder, who led a campaign to bring Magnitsky's killers to justice, said Veselnitskaya ran "a fully funded operation" to promote the film and her client's interests in the United States.
Veselnitskaya has denied having any compromising information about Clinton. Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the Kremlin does not know who she is, adding that it "cannot keep track" of every Russian lawyer and their meetings in Russia or abroad.

YURI CHAIKA

Chaika, prosecutor general since 2006, is a longtime confidant of Putin and one of Russia's most powerful law enforcement officials. The Russian president nominates the prosecutor general, who is approved by the upper chamber of parliament. In Putin's 17 years in power, the chamber largely has been a rubber-stamp body.
In 2015, Russian anti-corruption crusader Alexei Navalny, Putin's most popular opponent, published a damning investigation that detailed what he described as shady deals involving Chaika's sons and other senior prosecutors. It documented how the sons built a business empire on their father's connections. One son, the investigation alleged, was involved in business deals with the wives of Russian gangsters who terrorized a town in southern Russia until they were arrested and charged with killing a family of 12 in 2010. Despite evidence that local prosecutors had turned on a blind eye on the gang for years, Chaika kept his job.
Chaika called the accusations false and accused Navalny of following someone's "order" to discredit him. Amid public pressure to investigate Chaika and his family, Aras Agalarov was one of the few to spring to his defense, buying a newspaper ad lashing out at Navalny and dismissing his findings as relying on "groundless accusations."
Public calls to investigate or fire Chaika fell flat. Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev suggested that going after Chaika and other officials would be tantamount to returning to the purges under Josef Stalin.
Several months after Navalny's report, Chaika was reappointed for another five-year term.

RINAT AKHMETSHIN

Akhmetshin, the Russian-American lobbyist who attended a meeting at Trump Tower last year, is a former military officer who has attracted congressional scrutiny over his political activities and has been shadowed by allegations of connections to Russian intelligence.
Akhmetshin, who denies these allegations, confirmed his participation in the June 2016 meeting with Donald Trump Jr. to The Associated Press on Friday.
A naturalized American citizen who has lived in Washington since the early 1990s, Akhmetshin is known for having lobbied to weaken a U.S. law levying sanctions on Russians and his name has also surfaced in lawsuits, including one involving the hacking of a company's computer systems.
Akhmetshin denied suggestions made in media reports, congressional letters and litigation that he is a former officer in Russia's military intelligence service known as the GRU, dismissing the allegations as a "smear campaign." He told the AP that he served in the Soviet Army from 1986 to 1988 after he was drafted but was not trained in spy tradecraft. He said his unit operated in the Baltics and was "loosely part of counterintelligence."
Along with Veselnitskaya, Akhmetshin is known for lobbying efforts to undercut the Magnitsky Act, economic sanctions targeting Russian officials and individuals. Early in 2016, Akhmetshin said, he helped set up a nonprofit foundation based in Delaware, the Human Rights Accountability Global Initiative, to lobby U.S. officials in an effort to strip Magnitsky's name from the law.
Several wealthy Russian oligarchs agreed to provide financial backing for the foundation's lobbying, Akhmetshin said, providing at least $300,000. Among them, he said, was Denis Katsyv. Congressional lobbying documents show that the foundation spent $290,000 last year on lobbying. At least $10,000, the records indicate, was paid directly to Akhmetshin as a lobbyist.
Akhmetshin's name has also surfaced in lawsuits, including a New York court case in which a mining company branded him a "former Soviet military counterintelligence officer" and accused him of involvement in the hacking of its computer systems. Those claims were withdrawn last year, court records show.

Syrian army takes more oil fields from Islamic State in Raqqa and eastern desert

Authentic news,No fake news.

BEIRUT (Reuters) - The Syrian army backed by heavy Russian air strikes seized a string of oil wells in southwest Raqqa province on Saturday, as retreating Islamic State militants battle to defend their remaining territory in the country.
State-owned Ikhbariyah television quoted a military source as saying the army had taken control of Wahab, al Fahd, Dbaysan, al-Qseer, Abu al Qatat and Abu Qatash oil fields and several other villages in the desert area that lies in the southwest of Raqqa province.
The seized oil fields lie south of the town of Rasafa and its oil wells, which the army took last month from the militants in their first major territorial gains inside the province.
The army and Iranian-backed militias have in the last few months been advancing east of Aleppo city and seizing swathes of territory west of the Euphrates River that militants have pulled out of to defend their de facto capital of Raqqa, where they are now battling U.S.-backed troops inside the city.
The latest gains tighten the army's grip on a bulge of territory stretching from eastern Hama province to eastern Homs and the edge of Raqqa and Deir Zor provinces, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor said.
The monitor said the Russian air force intensified its strikes on several targets and towns held by the militants in the area including Uqairbat, a target of Russian cruise missiles fired from warships in the Mediterranean at the end of May.
The army's next goal is to retake the town of Sukhna, a gateway to the eastern province of Deir Zor that borders Iraq and likely to be the militants' last major bastion in Syria if Raqqa falls.
The army and its Iranian-backed allies have also announced in the last few days steady gains in the desert northeast of the ancient city of Palmyra with their capture of the Hail gas field that brought them almost 18 kms south of Sukhna.
Heavy fighting has however continued in the last 48 hours near Hail and the nearby Arak gas field that the Syrian army took last month, both the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and jihadist websites said.
The army and Iranian-backed militias have been engaged in a campaign since May to fill the void left by the retreat of militants in areas they once controlled in the vast eastern Syrian desert that stretches all the way from central Syria to the south eastern border with Iraq and Jordan.
In the southeastern desert, heavy fighting continued between the army and its Iranian backed allies on one side and the Western-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA) rebels in the rugged eastern countryside of the city of Sweida in southern Syria.
The army said it had captured most of these areas that are also near the border with Jordan, while the rebels said they had inflicted losses on Lebanon's powerful Hezbollah group and Iraqi Shi'ite militias.

Bangladesh elite force cordons off militant hideout

Authentic news,No fake news.

DHAKA, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh's anti-crime elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Sunday cordoned off a residential building on the outskirts of capital Dhaka when militants with huge explosives opened fire at the law enforcers.
The RAB team surrounded the village house early Sunday suspecting presence of Islamist militants there, said Abdul Awal, a police official in Ashulia.
"Militants fired at least five gunshots" from inside the house, he said, adding that the militants also hurled crude bombs at the law enforcers.
In retaliation, according to the official, RAB members also fired at the militants.
No one was hurt in the incidents of gunfire and blasts.
The RAB team on loudspeaker asked the suspected militants to surrender.
Authorities have already imposed a restriction on movement of vehicles and pedestrians around the terror hideout which is now under siege by the security forces.
No further details were immediately available about the raid.
Security has been tightened in Bangladesh since militants attacked a Spanish cafe in Dhaka's Gulshan on July 1 last year, killing 22 people mostly foreigners.
Since the cafe attack, Bangladeshi police have conducted series of large-scale operations against militants.

94 percent of employees in Taiwan considering job change: survey

Authentic news,No fake news.

TAIPEI, July 15 (Xinhua) -- About 94 percent of employees in Taiwan are considering searching for a new job, indicating rigid new work rules as a major reason, a survey released by Taiwan's 1111 Job Bank showed on Friday.
Among those who intended to change jobs within three months, 37 percent said their reason for wanting to change jobs was the result of new work rules introduced in December, according to the survey.
A total of 20.1 percent of interviewees said their salary had fallen and welfare worsened due to the new rules, according to the poll.
Some of those dissatisfied with the new work rules said they were concerned about their prospects since the new regulations caused higher operation costs, while others were unhappy that their responsibilities or work schedules had changed due to the new rules.
Under the new regulations, the maximum number of work hours is 40 hours per week, with one mandatory day off and one flexible rest day. Employers are required to pay overtime for work carried out on the flexible day off.
Daniel Lee, vice president of 1111 Job Bank, said many employers and employees have complained that the rigid work rules leave less leeway for more flexible work schedules.
"The overtime pay is quite high, so some employers prefer to hire dispatch workers to cut costs, whereas employees on the payroll receive lower wages than before since their work hours are reduced. Those who cannot put up with the loss want to make a change. This is a main reason for the job-hopping boom," Lee said.
A poll released by the job bank on July 5 showed that 56 percent of the employees in Taiwan feel the new rules have affected their lives and more than 78 percent said the rules have resulted in growing tension between them and their employers, said Lee.
Friday's survey also showed that 31 percent of respondents considering a job change said that the economic recovery on the island made them confident about looking for a better job.
Taiwan's unemployment rate dropped to a two-year low to 3.66 percent in May and the authority has raised its economic growth forecast from 1.92 percent to 2.05 percent for 2017.
Meanwhile, the survey showed most employees in Taiwan are frequent job-hoppers, with 85.3 percent of respondents saying they had moved to another job within three months after they started a job and 24.5 percent of them even saying they had quit a job on the same day they started it.
