China consolidates ranking as Chile's top wine market
Authentic news,No fake news.
SANTIAGO, April 7 (Xinhua) -- China overtook the United States in 2016 to become Chile's No. 1 wine market, Angelica Valenzuela, commercial director of Vinos de Chile, said on Friday.
Wine consumption in China grew 13.8 percent last year, Valenzuela told reporters at a press conference organized by the Imagen de Chile Foundation, an agency charged with promoting the national brand.
"The wine market that is growing so dynamically in Asia is today driving consumption," said the official, whose industry group represents Chilean winemakers.
Last year, Chile -- the world's fourth largest wine exporter -- saw a 4.8 percent increase in wine exports by the liter, bringing in some 1.35 billion U.S. dollars in revenue, according to the Vinos de Chile.
"Our goals and targets for positioning Chilean wine abroad are now more effective than ever. Still, we have to continue to increase our growth in China, keeping in mind that per capita consumption there is still low, and it is a market with a lot of potential," said Valenzuela.
In 2016, with the backing of export promotion agency ProChile and the foundation, Chile's wine industry launched its first ever international ad campaign targeted directly at consumers in key markets, such as China and the United States.
Under the banner "Love Wine, Love Chile," the campaign targeted consumers between the ages of 20 and 35 with a message touting the quality, diversity, innovation and sustainability of Chile's wineries.
This year, Vinos de Chile plans to continue to promote national wines with events planned in priority markets, including China, the U.S., Brazil, Canada and Britain.
The main goal is to consolidate Chile's image as the leading producer of varied, sustainable, premium wines in the "New World," which includes Europe, the U.S., Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
So far this year, exports have continued to grow, with volume and sales to China up 25.1 percent and 38 percent, respectively; while those numbers registered 18.8 percent and 36.6 percent for the United States, and 21.8 percent and 33 percent for Canada.
What segment of the population is driving growth?Millennials between the ages of 31 and 35 who purchase over the Internet, where costs are invariably lower than at more traditional brick-and-mortar retailers, according to Valenzuela.
Yellow fever death toll surpasses 200 in Brazil
Authentic news,No fake news.
RIO DE JANEIRO, April 7 (Xinhua) -- The death toll caused by yellow fever in Brazil has surpassed 200, mainly in the southeastern states, said the Brazilian government on Friday.
Since an outbreak in December 2016, yellow fever has killed 202 people, 148 of whom were in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais, said the Health Ministry.
The states of Espirito Santo, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro also have yellow fever deaths.
Health authorities have distributed over 20 million doses of vaccine to fight the largest outbreak of yellow fever in decades.
Ecuador begins presidential vote recount in 5 provinces
Authentic news,No fake news.
QUITO, April 8 (Xinhua) -- The National Electoral Council (CNE) of Ecuador began on Friday a vote recount in five provinces where objections have been received, concerning the results of the second round of the country's presidential elections on April 2.
On Tuesday, the CNE declared in its official results that Lenin Moreno, candidate of the ruling PAIS Alliance, had won presidential runoff with 51.16 percent of valid votes, while opposition challenger Guillermo Lasso, garnered 48.84 percent, with 99.65 percent of votes counted.
However, Lasso refused to accept CNE's results and noted that he was the victim of electoral fraud.
In a press conference Friday, Diego Tello, CNE's national coordinator of electoral processes said that recounts were happening in the provinces of Chimborazo, Imbabura, Pichincha, Cotopaxi and Carchi, and the recount was being observed by delegates from both Moreno's PAIS Alliance and Lasso's CREO movement.
Although election observers declared they found no evidence that the results were false, the charges lodged with the CNE claimed that there was a difference between the number of people who had voted on the day and the number of votes that had been counted.
Juan Pablo Pozo, president of the CNE, denied this week that there had been any fraud and called the country's ballot system a "success."

5.7 quake rocks Philippines
Authentic news,No fake news.
A magnitude 5.7 earthquake rocked the Philippines on Saturday, the US Geological Survey said, sending people running out of buildings in the capital Manila.
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from the quake, which the USGS said struck at 3:08 pm (0708 GMT) just off the southern coast of the main Philippine island of Luzon, about 110 kilometres (68 miles) south of Manila.
AFP reporters saw people running out of office buildings in Manila's financial district, while local television network ABS-CBN broadcast live footage of frightened commuters fleeing the passenger terminal at the port of Batangas, near the epicentre.
