Trappings of War

Desperate to find signs of sanity amid the chaos in Washington, many pundits and commentators have anointed Defense Secretary James "Mad Dog" Mattis as the Trump administration's token moderate. Although he has been described as a "scholar warrior" and "the most revered Marine in a generation,"  writes Mehdi Hasan in his first column for The Intercept, Mattis has already taken the U.S. to the brink of war with Iran. "The defense secretary may not be a bigot or a crank," Hasan observes, "but he could prove far more lethal in the long run."

Trump's fatal attraction to the trappings of war was on full display during his address before Congress as he paraded the grieving widow of a Navy SEAL before cameras. As Glenn Greenwald points out, such images of suffering are a standard trope of war propaganda. We can expect to see many more widows and orphans in the years to come.
